How To Have A Good Work-Life Balance For Good Mental Health 

A good work-life balance is something everyone needs to strive for in life for many reasons, not least of which is the fact that a good work-life balance equals good mental health (of course, that doesn’t take into account any underlying issues, which you’ll need to get help for separately). 

The problem is that although having a good work-life balance might sound simple, once you get started on it, it can become a challenge – there are lots of obstacles that can get in the way and cause issues so that in the end, you might even give up on the ideal altogether. That’s not something that should happen, so if you want to know what to do, keep reading for a few of the many ideas that will help you. 

Know When To Ask For Help

It’s your work and your life, which means it’s your balance to strike – no one else needs to be involved, isn’t that right? Well, not exactly. In fact, trying to create the ideal work-life balance by yourself could just lead to more stress than you had before, especially if you think you’re not managing your routine very well; you might even have to add guilt to the list of emotions and feelings that have come about

It’s actually better to ask for help when you need it – and that goes for everything in life, not just your work-life balance. Firstly, speak to your boss about the potential for working more flexible hours, or maybe working from home at least some of the time, as that could solve a multitude of problems. Then speak to your friends and family; what can they do to help you? Maybe you can get the kids to do more chores around the house, such as allowing you some time for self-care when needed. Have Boundaries 

One great thing you can do to have a good work-life balance is to put boundaries in place. When there’s a real divide between work and your personal life, it becomes much easier to ensure that both get an equal amount of your time and attention (when possible – remember to stay flexible because, at some points, one might need more attention than the other, depending on what’s happening and what your responsibilities are). 

If you work outside of the home, that’s an easier thing to do – don’t check your emails or phone messages once you leave the office, and don’t take work home with you, and the divide can be a simple one. If you work from home things are harder, but you can still put the same measures in place – you just have to be strict with yourself and not go back into your office until work starts again the next day. 

Have Hobbies

One problem with a good work-life balance is that even if you do have boundaries in place if you’re not doing much with your personal time, it can be tempting to check in on work; maybe you’ll even tell yourself that you can get ahead of your tasks for the next day, for example. 

A good way to battle this issue is to have a hobby that will keep you occupied; you’ll be far less tempted to work when you’ve got fun things to do at home.
